Stigler Middle School Parents,
I would like to inform you of an incident that occurred at the conclusion of the SMS PTO Winter
Dance on Thursday, January 21, 2026. At the end of the event, a student reported to peers that there was a man with a gun outside the
cafeteria. There was never a threat made to students or to the school. The only unlocked
entrance used for entry and exit during the dance was the cafeteria doors, which were staffed by
an administrator and teachers at all times. At no point was there an unknown individual or a
“man with a gun” present on campus. Out of an abundance of caution, our School Resource Officer and a tribal officer assisted to
check the surrounding area and remained on site to ensure the continued safety of students and
families as the event concluded and students were picked up or walked home.
As always, the safety of our students is our highest priority. Staff were extremely proud of our
students’ behavior and enjoyment throughout the evening, and the event itself was well
supervised and orderly. We understand that hearing rumors of this nature can be upsetting, and
we take those concerns seriously. Today, our SRO, school counselor, and administration will be speaking with students to reassure
them, review safety procedures, and remind them that trusted adults are always available if they

Stigler Public Schools plans to be in session tomorrow, Friday, January 23rd, unless something changes in the timing of the arrival of winter precipitation. We will monitor the forecast throughout the night and if the decision is made to close we will notify parents by 6 am through the parent notification system, Facebook, and local news stations. The Checotah HS Basketball Tournament will now start on Wednesday, girls play at 10am and boys play at 11:30am

REMINDER: The JH Basketball games scheduled for January 15th against Eufaula have been moved to January 14th. All games will be at Stigler and will be played at the HS Gym. 6th girls -9:45am, 7th girls -10:30am, 8th girls - 11:15am. 6th boys -12:00pm, 7th boys - 12:45pm, 8th boys -1:30pm. Each SMS class will be allowed to go with their teacher for one class period to watch. There is no admission fee for the students attending but they may bring $ for the concession stand.

We have added JH basketball games on Monday December 15th. Girls play at home; boys play at Hartshorne. 6th grade will start at 5pm followed by 7th grade, then 8th grade.

The HS basketball games scheduled for Thursday Dec 4th at Talihina have been moved to Jan 6 after the JH games. The 7/8 games will be combined that night and start at 3:30 with a HS start at 6:00.

There has been an adjustment to the JH basketball schedule for Monday, November the 17th. The JH boys will be playing at home and the girls will be traveling to Pocola. Starting game times will be 4:30.

Drivers Ed forms are available in the HS office for those
students who are interested in taking drivers ed starting on
January 10, 2026. To be eligible for this class, students must
already be 15 years old or will be 15 years old by January 31,
2026. Parent consent forms must be signed and returned to the
HS office by December 11, 2025.

Reminder: Tomorrow Thursday, November 13th, an evacuation drill will be conducted involving both Stigler High School and Stigler Middle School. The drill will take place in the morning. This will include all students and staff, and will be coordinated with members of the Stigler Police Department. Students and staff will be evacuated from buildings and will be escorted to designated areas near the school campuses. Traffic in those areas may be redirected for the safety of all of those involved. Thank you for your patience and for supporting Stigler Public Schools.

As many families prepare for possible upcoming changes to their SNAP benefits, we want to share an important reminder for our Stigler Public Schools community. Every student in SPS will continue to receive FREE breakfast and lunch every school day. In addition, students in the SGS after-school program who normally receive a snack and/or dinner will continue to receive these. Regardless of any federal or state food-aid program changes, Stigler Public Schools remains committed to ensuring that all students have access to healthy, nutritious meals so they can stay focused and ready to learn.
